Double-sided silk embroideries are created by stitching on both sides of a transparent silk fabric so that the design can be seen and enjoyed from both sides. In fact, the final embroidery appears to have two fronts, with no reverse stitching visible to the naked eye. They truly are a master craft, with sometimes even the colours of the embroidery different on the two sides!
The embroiderer actually works on only one side, whether or not the colours are the same. This requires a detailed intuitive feel of the composition on the reverse.
A single needle is used to embroider areas that are the same on both sides, with two needles used when embroidering different colours.
In both cases, the silk threads used are very fine. This together with the quality of the workmanship, is why you cannot figure out which is the front and which is the back.
