The horse has long being considered a noble animal, loved by many for its strength, loyalty, endurance and intelligence. It is one of the oldest themes in art from the prehistoric cave paintings of millenia ago to the western artist George Stubbs to the modern Chinese painter Xu Beihong. It was he in the east who combined the ancient brush techniques of the traditional Chinese painter with the realism of the west.
The horse whether galloping, resting, grazing or grooming became a favoured subject through the efforts of Xu Beihong, and it is his work that is the inspiration for this embroidery.
