The Giant Panda is special in Chinese culture and although the dragon is still the national symbol it does have a place in the hearts of the people. In fact, what could be more loved with the round face, the black and white patches and the sedentary non threatening behaviour. They are a bit like a living breathing teddy bear.
Pandas in the wild live exclusively in China and as every child knows there main diet is bamboo but they do very occasionally eat other vegetables and even fish or meat. However, with 99% of their diet consisting of the relatively unnutritious bamboo they are particularly subject to environmental change and habitat encroachment. In fact, in fast growing countries such as China conflicts between the natural environment and the local people are almost inevitable.
Nevertheless with a significant increase in the number of panda reserves, stiff penalties for the deliberate harm of pandas and protection of a reasonable proportion of their range, there is some evidence that the number of wild pandas is starting to increase.
