Thangkas are transformative, thangkas are symbolic, thangkas are enduring. Throughout the great Himalayan range of India, Nepal, Bhutan and of course Tibet, the present day artisan produces these magnificent works just as his predecessors did centuries earlier.
They depict the stories and deities of Buddhism, by visualising these images, together with the spiritual insights they contain, the faithful believe they can achieve enlightenment. For this reason, if one circumnavigates a monastery in the manner of a pilgrim, recent rock paintings can be found, which attempt to reproduce these Thangka paintings. Put simply, the images are ingrained and are deeply symbolic in the minds of the faithful, and are found in people’s prayer rooms to ward off misfortune and bring good luck.
Thangkas are hand painted on cloth and aesthetically depict religious symbolism. Traditionally they are produced on scrolls so they can be rolled up and carried, much like a Christian may carry his bible. For Buddhists they have great meaning, and are important to every monastery, while for non-Buddhists the skill of the artwork is a marvel. Remember these are hand painted not prints!
